Competency aims

-To give students the skills and understanding to produce 3D CAD parts and drawings of engineering components. -To understand and use SolidWorks design capabilities. -To perform stress analyses of components and to determine their factor of safety. -To produce professional engineering reports.

Learning outcomes

-Use solid modelling software (SolidWorks) to create 3D solid models of parts from orthographic engineering drawings. -To create assembly models of engineering components using solid modelling software. -To create engineering orthographic and isometric drawings from solid models of engineering components. -To perform stress analysis of engineering components using simulation application.

Course contents

-Introduction to SolidWorks, user interface and options. -Working with planes and sketches. -Lofts, swepts and revolved sections. -Patterns. -Simulation and Analysis. -Surface Modelling and Assemblies. -Configurations.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Technical Drawing and CAD. Students are assumed to be able to produce orthographic drawings using engineering software such as AutoCAD when they begin. Course limit: 45 students due to size of computer class. If the limit is reached, students who do not have this course as a mandatory part of their curriculum in the given period and year may take the course via independent learning using the available online resources.

Download the SolidWorks software for home use from lab.arcada.fi (contains license key) or http://www.solidworks.com/sw/education/SDL_form.html All deadlines dates must be met. Students not submitting assessment work by the deadline dates will be removed from the course.

Assessment requirements

Assessment: -Submission of the "Introduction to SolidWorks Tutorial" (10%) -Submission of individual assignment Design of a Chair (90%). Note Urkund will be used to analyze these reports for similarity. Correct scientific writing skills are a very important consideration in the assessment. It is not based on just the engineering design work. -There is no compulsory attendance of lectures for this course. Although attendance is recommended, students may choose to complete all work entirely individually also. -Passed assignment marks can not be improved by resubmitting marked reports. -Previous year's assignments are not valid. Week 3: Working with planes and sketches from Weekly tips and exercises. Idler arm tutorial. Week 4: Lofts, swepts and revolved sections from from Weekly tips and exercises. Week 5: Patterns from Weekly tips and exercises. Modelling a dice. Week 6: Simulation and Analysis from Weekly tips and exercises. Week 7: Individual Work (no formal class) Week 8: Surface Modelling and Assemblies. Week 9: Configurations Week 10 and 11: Project Completion - Chair Design and Report (90%).
