Competency aims

To give students the understanding to select the most suitable manufacturing process for a given component. To understand the link between manufacturing processes and the properties of the material. To understand basic machining operations and tools. To give students the fundamental skills for future CNC machining of moulds.

Learning outcomes

To describe common manufacturing processes. To select the best manufacturing process for the production of a given engineering component. To relate the structure of materials to the given manufacturing process. To calculate Young's Modulus and the Ultimate Tensile Stress for a tensile test. To use a milling machine. To be able to determine machining speeds and feeds for lathe and milling. To calculate manufacturing time and costs. To understand the iron carbide phase diagram. To present in groups.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Laboratory safety for engineers or Introduction to University Studies (2017-18 or earlier) Students who have passed the course can not retake the course in the following year in order to improve the grade.

Additional information

Please sign up to lab withing the first weeks of the relevant period itslearning. It is also required to enrol to a presentation group within the first 2 weeks of class. Assessment requirements

Students should sign up to the milling lab in itslearning in the 1st week of the period. It is also required to attend the group presentation. Although recommended, it is not compulsory to attend normal lectures. Students can follow the assigned Chapters and exercises from the course text book. 15%: Individual Assignment 1: Theoretical Tensile test exercise 15%: Individual Assignment 2: Machining 20%: Group Presentations 50%: Graded Exercise (online).
