Competency aims

The aim of the course is that students are able to prove basic knowledge in research methods that are specially relevant to the area of social service and can apply basic research methods in studies.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to

- know and understand basic research concepts, designs, data collection and data analyse methods with both quantitative and qualitative research approaches and relevance to the research and developmental work within the area of social service.

- read,analyze and critically review research articles, reports and thesis in Swedish, Finnish and English within the area of social service.

- understand basic principles in research ethics.

Research process.
Quantitative and qualitative research designs.
Questionnaire, interview and observation as data collection methods.
Statistics.
Content analysis.
Research ethics.
Critical review of scientific articles, reports and thesis.
Information retrieval.
Scientific writing.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Basic courses in social service

Additional information

Tutorials and skills trainings are compulsory.

Examination in research process: Home examination
2.10.09. Deadline in Blackboard 7.10.09 at 9.00. Cut off date in Blackboard 31.12.09.
All the three examinations (tutorials, exam in statistics and research process) should be accomplished before getting the final grade.
