Competency aims

The aim of the course is to provide the student an
understanding of how intellectual property and intellectual
property legislation influences creative companies' value
creation. In addition, students who are in the process of writing
the BA thesis in any topic presented in the three possible
Culture Business courses are expected to advance their theses
during the course.

Learning outcomes

After a finished course, the student is expected to understand
the basics of intellectual property law as well as what kind of a
roll the intellectual property has in creative companies' value
creation.

Course contents

The course comprises lectures, guest lectures,
workshops/supervisor discussions, presentations, a feedback
session and independent studies, in which the student learns
the basics of copyright law, trademark law and patent law.
Further, the student learns how these legislative systems and
intellectual property create value for creative companies
and society. Depending on the stage of the student's studies,
the course attendees have two ways to complete the course.
Alternative 1 is for students who are about to finish their
studies and are in the process of writing their BA thesis about
an economic or a management topic within creative industries.
These students a) submit a learning diary including
critical discussion about at least three lectures' content and its
compulsory readings (2 - 4 pages per lecture & readings),
b) write the theory chapter or an analysis of the empirical
material complemented with conclusions (10 - 16 pages) for
their thesis, and c) present the chapter in the class. The
students receive feedback of the
chapters after the presentations. These students must also
participate in a supervision session with the course
administrator before September 21st. Alternative 2 is for
students who do not use the course to directly advance their BA
theses. These students a) submit a learning diary
including critical discussion about at least three lectures'
content and its compulsory readings (2 - 4 pages per lecture &
readings) pages), b) write a home exam,
and c) take part in a workshop and a group debate, during
which the students discuss and present the
cases of the home exam. The workshop and the debate act as
feedback sessions for students. The students' chapter
presentations, the workshop (excluded students who present a
thesis chapter) and the feedback session regarding the home
exam are compulsory for all course attendees.

The course's assignments can be written either in English or in
Swedish.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Culture Business 1 and 2 or equivalent knowledge.
Students with completed courses in Culture Business 1 and 2 are
prioritised in enrollment.

Previous course names

No prior courses.

Additional information

The course is particularly suitable for students who write their
theses on a business economic topic within the culture industry
or on a business economic topic by using an approach derived
from culture studies.
