Competency aims

Scandinavian design is an establishment often claimed to be influenced by the nature and geographical location of the Scandinavian countries. Words like simple, clean and functional are often considered synonymous with Scandinavian design.

The course objectives are two-fold. Firstly, the course serves to introduce students to a cross-section of Nordic and Scandinavian cinema through viewings, readings and discussions in class. Students, after completing the course will be able to discuss in an informed manner the contributions made by Scandinavian filmmakers such as Carl Th. Dreyer, Ingmar Bergman, Aki Kaurismäki, Lars von Trier, Fridirik Thor Fridriksson, Klaus Härö – among others. Students will also be able to identify the styles and influences associated with Scandinavian cinema and will develop an understanding of the trends and direction in which contemporary Scandinavian cinema is moving.

Secondly the course offers an alternative platform for discussing cinema; an alternative from a more narrow textual analysis to addressing issues of design, nature and further, offers an insight into often neglected influences that provide filmmakers their inspiration for their work. Students should after having completed the course have the necessary foundation to investigate filmmaking on a broader base and to understand the diversity of influences a filmmaker is consciously or unconsciously exposed to. Students would have developed an understanding that filmmaking as any art form is born of and influenced by the space surrounding the filmmaker and that this space is not only informed by historical and sociological conditions but that the geo-physical forms offer immediate influences which are seldom the concern of film critics or scholars.
