Competency aims
The aim of the course is- to educate a mentor for an immigrant child between the age 8 and 12. The mentor and child get together for 3 hours once a week, over the period from October –May, 8 months.

that students will deepen their knowledge of multicultural and ethnic diversity within Finnish society.

students will gain an insight into a child’s life (and family) and increased understanding and knowledge for people that have a completely different life to their own.

the student-mentor will be an adult role model to the child, will help the child to integrate into Finnish society, to increase the child’s self confidence and language skills, motivating the child to get involved in higher education studies.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to.achieve “mutual benefit” based on the child and mentor experiences which will provide deeper understanding of different cultures
- motivate the child to perform better in and out of school
- have insights in the world of a primary school child
- become more tolerant and understanding of the child’s social and cultural backgrounds, developing great intercultural communication skills.
- take over responsibility for a child for limited period promotes organizational skills.
- have experience with projects that supports innovative thinking and ways to integrate immigrants in Finland.
