Competency aims

To be able to use fluid mechanics as a tool for engineering applications such as plastics processing.
To use SolidWorks FloXpress tool.

Learning outcomes

To calculate pressure differences in static fluids.
To apply the Bernoulli equation and momentum .
equation to the the flow of fluids.
To determine head losses in flows.
To use SolidWorks in fluid mechanics applications.

Course contents

-Introduction to Fluid Properties and graded exercise (Review of Dynamics)
-Static Fluids
-Basic Equations, Momentum Equation
-Incompressible Inviscid Flow
-Internal Incompressible Viscous Flow
-In Class Lab Demonstration of pipe flow including : head losses, power of pumps and flow rates

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Mathematics 1st and 2nd year courses.
Mechanics.

The course is not recommended to student who have not completed Mechanics.

Additional information

Although the attendance of weekly lectures is recommended, it is not compulsory. Students may thus choose to complete all work at home.

Individual Graded Exercises:
20%: Revision of Dynamics Graded Exercise 1 (compulsory)
20%: Graded exercise 2 (compulsory)
20%: Graded exercise 3 (compulsory)
40%: Graded exercise 4 (compulsory)

A total mark of 50% is required to pass the course. Any student submitting all required work on time and who do not have a passed grade will be offered a means to make up the grade from 0 to 1. There is no final exam in this course. Dates of assignments given in itslearning.
