Competency aims

The aim of the course is to teach the modern
methods of analysing and identifying materials,
in
order to successfully apply the taught
techniques
to solve realistic engineering problems.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is
expected to be able to understand modern
analytical methods used and choose an
appropriate testing method for the analysis and
identification of different materials.

Course contents

Lectures and theoretical exercises on selecting
analytical methods, spectroscopic methods,
thermal methods, chromatographic methoods,
microscopic methods and failure analysis.
Laboratory exercises on optical microscopy, UV-
Vis and DSC.
Excursion to analytical facility.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Polymer Chemistry
Laboratory safety for engineers or Introduction to
University Studies (2017-18 or earlier)

NOTE FOR 2019-20
This course does not appear on the study plan
for
PM1-4 in 2019-20. Lectures will not be
provided,
but the exam and labs will be available to PM4
students. If you are a PM1-3 student, then you
should take this course in your fourth year of
studies.
