Competency aims

The aim of the course is to give the student the skills and tools required to understand, use, design and manage modern logistical systems, for control of goods, money
and information.

Learning outcomes

At the successful completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- Define the concepts of logistics, SCM, customer service levels.
- Describe and apply modern methods for inbound logistics, such as Kan-ban and JIT systems.
- Describe and apply the methods of outbound logistics and distribution.
- Take, analyze and act on products in inventory, using modern equipment and methods, such as ABC and EOQ.

- Describe and identify materials handling equipment, including unit loads and packaging.

- Describe, select and evaluate transportation modes, vehicles and systems.

Course contents

- Definitions and understanding of logistics, SCM, customer service.
- Inbound logistics, JIT and Kanban systems.
- Outbound logistics, distribution.
- Internal logistics, inventory systems. Types of inventory. Inventory analysis, ABC methods.
- Inventory decision making, EOQ, reorder points.
- Materials handling. Unit loads. Packaging.
- Transportation systems and management. Terms of sale.
- Transportation systems and vehicles. Modal selection.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

A basic knowledge of economics and mathematics is recommended.
