Learning outcomes

This subject will give the students the expertise needed to use database management software in order to model, design, implement and manage simple relational databases. To achieve this goal a real database system environment will be introduced in the PC-laboratory. The student will also establish a general understanding of the theory behind relational databases.

Course contents

Database theory:
- definitions, concepts and terminology
- relational database model
- data base management systems and query language
- data integrity
Working with databases in PC environment using MSAccess or SQL:
- select queries, data manipulation (DML)
- creation of tables and other database objects (DDL)
- forms, reports
- introduction to database applications
Multi-user databases: client-server environment, file sharing and locking principles, security aspects.
