With it’s 16 000m2, three bright squares and innovative learning environments the house has been designed to create inspiring and efficient working environments for both staff and students. The Arcada campus is located only 15 minutes from the centre of Helsinki near good traffic connections. The building is owned by Fastighets Ab Arcada Nova, which also owns the Prakticum building next to Arcada, the studenthousing and the Cor-house . During 2019 a sports hall is expected to be finished in addition to Arcadas campus.
As a student at Arcada, you will be assigned your own electronic key that you are personally responsible for. During weekends, you can enter and exit the Arcada main building with your electronic key only through the door on the right side of the two main entrances.
Focus for 2017
On the 31st October 2017 we had a Green Office audition. The audition was successful and we have done a good job so far. The certificate was renewed. Especially we succeeded to decrease water and paper consumption. Specially noticed was our versatile waste management and environmental awareness throughout our university.
In May 476 solar panels were installed on Arcada’s roof. One tenth of the electricity will come from the solar panels. The solar panels will produce around 125 000 kilowatt hours per year. That equals an average electricity consumption for over sixty apartment flats. This means we have one of the biggest solar panel establishments in Finland. The solar panel establishment will also be used in the education, for research and development at the university.
In the beginning of May Helsinki city installed city bikes at the campus area, just outside the Arabia shopping centre. The city bikes proved to be a successful project and were in frequent use.
In June Arcada banners became unique design products. These products are now sold in our Arcada shop. In co-operation with Globe Hope, a Finnish design company, Arcada banners got new life as bags and purses. This way we support sustainability and environmentally friendly thinking.
We organized a pop-up event at Arcada to promote the Earth Hour event (25th March 2017). We wanted to encourage both students and personnel to switch off lights during one hour as a part of the global movement and to take a concrete climate action.
On the 19th October 2017 Arcada Green organized a swap day and fleemarket event. During the event students and personnel were given the possibility to sell, buy or change items they no longer needed. To support and learn more about recycling also other organizations were invited, such as WWF, Finlands Natur och Miljö and the Helsinki Reuse Centre.
